Biometric technology is critical component to adaptation of many new technologies like mobility, risk and security, big data processing and  new paradigms like customer experience management as well as efficiency. It is not just critical to security where after 26/11 in India and 9/11 in USA biometric technology has become a critical component of identifying individuals and becomes a key component of Passport, Driving License, Voters ID card or even UID.

Other uses of Biometric technology has been in mobile applications where one needs to identify individuals for any authorization of transactions as mobile devices once outside the office could be operated by anyone. Another use of biometric is for efficiency and customer experience for example in keyless cars which open through finger prints of the driver and adjust the controls like seat position, climate control inside based on profile and preference of the user. Similarly in airline industry Biometric is used for crew immigration and security to save on waiting time of the crew.

Many verticals like BFSI use for credit cards, retail use for mobile device user authentication, manufacturing companies technology companies are integrating the solutions in their equipment like automotive – keyless cars, laptop and PC companies have fingerprint authentications instead of passwords, government is using for voters-id, passport, driving license and registration of all citizen services. Advantage of biometric is not just in security but preventing any fraudulent transaction and not having any duplicate of unique id’s such as passport, drivers license , PAN numbers etc which earlier could be duplicated as the names, residence address etc or other information could be written in different ways by the same person.

Government is using Biometric in many areas already like for voters-id, passport, driving license, PAN number  and other citizen services like policing etc. In fact having biometric databases can help identify the migration trends from villages to cities, associated with demographic profiles the same information can be used for planning infrastructure and services needed for develop metal needs of the country. Biometric information also can be similarly used by private enterprise equally well to provide a better customer experience as well as plan for thir products and services for the right demographic and location.

A biometric solution for an airline where the crew immigration and security is done using biometric will save crew time which is additional cost for any airlines as airlines crew get paid from the time of when they leave home to when they reach home. Biometrics is also being integrated in many solutions like credit cards,  healthcare  where biometric samples are collected from wrist bands or devices and information sent to labs or monitoring centers.

The biometric Industry is expected to grow globally to $24b by 2015.

  31. Biometric is one of the growing industry. Since whatever the disaster happens this industry will not get recession. Delivering Biometric software via SAAS – Software as a service will have more chance to satisfy all customer over a single unit.

  32. Certainly agree with you about that Biometrics are really critical and their adoption rate is currently increasing..Big data technologies will let the utilization of this data more critical and quick in adoption and adaption across the business unit. But i have one fear that countries like india where network and bandwidth infrastructure is not as comparing to advanced countries so validation will be long process which might hamper to success of such big initiatives (certainly not applicable across all). My thinking it is great technology but will still take time in developing countries to be commonly used. Whats your view?

    • Santosh says:

      Nitin,

Slightly, I am disagree with you, reason being, the moment we think implementing new technology into India, we are going step back. Where as in the case of ADHAAR card, people have negative though in the begining, now we are all having that privilege.

I feel we should integrate ADHAAR card biometric details to other security application, which will be real advantage to the nation.
